spiritual healing, some frequently asked questions.
The following questions and answers are provided as illustrative of the main questions that are asked of me from time to time. The answers given are of necessity general, and may not apply in all situations. The questions and answers are intended as a guide only and not as a replacement of literature that may be available, or advice that may be appropriate to particular circumstances. Appropriate advice should be obtained where necessary.

what is spiritual healing?
Different spiritual healers will see, and explain, spiritual healing in different ways. I see spiritual healing as a method of working with, and through, love, by opening the heart and channeling love through. It is a case of connecting to and working with that universal love that is around, and available, to all of us. No tools are needed, it is not mysterious. It is completely natural, safe and powerful. Having said that, for those who are interested in exploring spiritual healing, it is best to so explore under the guise of a reputable organisation eg. The NFSH Charitable Trust Limited (formerly the National Federation of Spiritual Healers).
how does spiritual healing work?
Spiritual healing works with the body at all levels, that is to say with mind, body and spirit. The energy is taken up by the body and goes to where it is needed. Spiritual healing works gently, but powerfully to bring the body into balance, thereby helping to achieve a harmonious state. At the end of the day the body has remarkable healing ability, but sometimes needs a little (or a lot) of help. Spiritual healing can provide that help.
how did you discover that you had "healing hands"?
I have devoted a considerable part of my life to spiritual enquiry, this being a fascination, and passion for me. As a child many phenomena that could not be readily explained occurred around me. From a very young age people with illnesses, or difficulties, gravitated towards me and felt better after spending time with me, and/or talking with me. As so often happens in this line of work a series of coincidences ("life pointers") came into play and led me to formally explore healing many years ago. For a time I felt that I should not follow this path owing to my "legal profession" career, but as with all things that which needs to be followed will out.
can everybody work with spiritual healing?
Yes. But just as everyone can make a sound on the piano, not everyone will be able to play the piano to such a level as to fill The Royal Albert Hall with people coming to listen to them. Healing takes place all around us all of the time - the mother who picks up the child who has fallen over and hugs him or her; the nurse who spends time talking with an upset patient; the person who gives a smile and a welcoming word. All of these things constitute healing. When one starts working with spiritual healing a personal journey usually commences and people comment on how they notice their ability to channel healing energy becoming stronger over time.
does spiritual healing cure illness?
I would not make any such statement, as to do so would not only be misleading, but against the code of conduct to which I subscribe. What I will say is that I have witnessed quite remarkable results from spiritual healing. In some cases I have heard it said that "it was nothing to do with healing, remission has occurred". It does not matter to me what the reason may be for anything, the fact that there has been significant benefit is enough in itself. Spiritual healing can help to mitigate pain, and is very relaxing. That in itself is a huge benefit in these times of stress.
can spiritual healing help with all illnesses?
Yes, but some spiritual healers may tend to work with particular ailments.
how can you say that someone who dies has been helped by spiritual healing?
Those who are terminally ill, and or are dying, often benefit significantly from spiritual healing. It is often overlooked in western culture that death is a part of life, and inevitable. Spiritual healing often helps people to find a significant amount of peace, and their relatives too.
what evidence is there of the effectiveness of spiritual healing?
At the moment this is largely anecdotal, although experiments have been carried out that show that those that have received spiritual healing recover more quickly, and more completely, than those who have not. To suggest that spiritual healing cannot exist because it cannot be measured by current instrumentation does not, for me, stand up. Ironically quantum physicists do not have a problem with the concept of energy transfer as it occurs with distant healing as it is in accordance with their calculations. I am sure that in the next decade or two the energy will be capable of being measured. On a personal level I have no doubt about its effectiveness.
what can I expect to experience at a spiritual healing session?
An explanation from the healer as to the process, how he or she works, the timing of the session, any financial details (some healers charge, others do not, some accept donations), discussion on what transpires and what the client may wish to talk about. The general feeling is one of deep relaxation, and the feeling of heat, cold and or a tingling sensation. Some spiritual healers will, with permission, touch the body (in appropriate places only) during healing, others will not. Touching, or not touching, makes no difference to the effectiveness of the healing.
what can I expect to happen after a healing session?
A good night's sleep. Often increased pain can be felt for a short while after healing - a bit like the matter coming to the surface before it dissipates. This is not a worrying sign, it is completely normal.
is it necessary to be religious or to have faith or to believe in spiritual healing for it to work?
No. Spiritual healing has nothing to do with religion or the belief of any person. The energy is channeled by the healer to the client, and goes to work irrespective of any of the client's beliefs. Obviously any person who considers that a particular matter will assist them is likely to find that it does - a question of the mind helping to trigger the body's own healing response.
if spiritual healing can do all the things that you say why is it not embraced wholeheartedly within the conventional medical system?
Spiritual healers (unless they are medically trained) are not qualified doctors, and as such there has been some resistance to the embracing of spiritual healing, and other complementary therapies, by the medical system. This position is slowly changing, and it is the case that a number of general practitioners now have spiritual healers working within their surgeries, and a number are now also working within the hospital framework. A number of doctors and nurses have undergone training as spiritual healers and embrace that in their work. I hope that, with the work being undertaken by UK Healers in connection with the Prince of Wales's Foundation for Integrated Health, this process will now speed up.
can you heal yourself?
Yes. We all have the ability to connect into the source of love, and to bring healing within ourselves. Sometimes, just as with other things, a helping hand from others is very useful.
can I stop seeing my doctor and or stop taking my prescribed medicine as I am seeing a spiritual healer?
Spiritual healing is complementary to conventional medicine, not an alternative or a replacement. The doctor remains in charge of the medical care of the client at all times. Spiritual healers that work within the code of conduct of eg. The NFSH Charitable Trust Limited are not permitted to diagnose, or countermand any medical advice. The optimum position is for the doctor and the spiritual healer to liaise over client care.
how do I go about finding a spiritual healer?
Get in touch with a reputable healing organisation, eg The NFSH Charitable Trust Limited (formally the National Federation of Spiritual Healers) who will put you in touch with spiritual healers in your area and or local healing centres.
how do I discover whether I can work with spiritual healing?
Many reputable healing organisations, eg. The NFSH Charitable Trust Limited (formally the National Federation of Spiritual healers) run training courses and programmes at central venues, and throughout the country. Get in touch with any such organisation that seems appropriate for you. Further organisations can be found by looking at the UK Healers website from our links page.
can I see a spiritual healer in hospital?
It is everyone's right to receive spiritual healing (although a spiritual healer may not attend upon a mother in childbirth). Whilst permission from the nursing/medical staff is not obligatory, it is certainly good practice for the nursing staff/medical team to be informed. The relevant consultant is responsible for the patient.
The nursing staff/medical authorities have the right to deny access to the ward to individuals (eg. Only relatives may visit; limited visiting hours etc). In these cases permission will need to be obtained. It is my experience that permission will generally be given. In the case of difficulty distant healing can be sent.
is distant healing as effective as seeing a spiritual healer face to face?
Yes, distant healing is just as effective. Some client's have claimed that it is even more powerful for them. As with all things people have personal preferences as to how they are treated.
is Reiki more effective than spiritual healing?
Both Reiki and spiritual healing are very effective, as are other forms of energy work eg. acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology, Indian head massage, shiatsu, aromatherapy etc. My understanding is that the main difference between Reiki and Spiritual Healing is that Reiki works with empowerment through attunement through a master and working with symbols, whereas in Spiritual Healing the healer is working direct with the source of love. In my view both forms of healing are working with love, but the description of the access is different. I would suggest that the most important thing from the client's point of view is to work with a practitioner that is professional, has had appropriate professional training and experience, is a member of a recognized professional body and one that they feel comfortable with, and with a system that they can relate too.
I can heal so why should I have anything to do with any recognized spiritual healing organisation?
It is true that some people are born with a "healing gift". As I see it going on training courses does not necessarily teach one how to heal, but it gives people the opportunity to learn to practice healing within a safe framework, and (very importantly) how to protect themselves. Belonging to an organisation also gives access to other healers, and support for issues that arise, both personally and professionally (although each individual has personal responsibility). The public are also entitled to expect health care professionals to work to professional standards and to carry appropriate insurance, etc, and which are matters undertaken by eg. The NFSH Charitable Trust Limited, and other organisations that partake in UK Healers. The UK is moving towards self regulation for spiritual healers by the work undertaken by UK Healers in conjunction with The Prince of Wales's Foundation for Integrated Health. This is an area of personal choice, but I expect that most members of the public will wish to consult with spiritual healers that subscribe to the professional standards as are required by these organisations having regard to the increased protection that they may have.
in working as a spiritual healer do you take on some of the difficulties and or illnesses of your client?
No. In channeling love the spiritual healer is passing that love through to the client, and as such should not be taking on board any of the difficult areas. Talk is had on questions of protection which the majority of spiritual healers will embrace on a regular basis, and which is one of the things worked through on training courses.
do you get depleted after giving spiritual healing?
No, on the contrary, working with spiritual healing is replenishing. The energy of the healer is not being used at all, and in channeling love, that love also remains with the healer.
does spiritual healing work with animals?
Yes. Animals are very receptive to healing, and will normally lie, stand or remain, very still whilst receiving healing. Remarkable results have been reported by the owners of animals who have received healing. Animals do not have the pre-conceptions that humans have with regard to energy work, they instinctively know what is beneficial for them.
